With the technical committee of the American Petroleum Institute devising 2 different product specification levels, the manufacture of API 5L x42 Seamless Pipe PSL1/ PSl2 will differ. Which is why it is mandatory that the buyer needs to specify which PSL is required for the manufacture of API 5L X42 carbon steel pipe. While api 5l x42 psl1 pipe is a standard quality for line pipes, the requirements api 5l x42 psl2 pipes are more detailed, and the method of inspection is much stricter as well.

The requirements pertaining to PSL 2 X42 Carbon Steel Pipe includes testing methods, mechanical requirements and chemical composition as well. While Black Painted X42 Line Pipe is made from carbon steel, this alloy has been utilized for the production of pipes mainly for its toughness and hardness properties. Since the API 5L x42 DSAW Pipe has very low or no corrosion resistance properties, these pipes are coated with 3LPE or FBE or black paint in order to enhance its corrosion resistance properties. For instance, the 3LPE coated API 5L x42 Pipe which is first coated with a high performance Fusion Bonded Epoxy primer, followed by a copolymer adhesive with the outer layer of polyethylene. 3LPE coated grade X42 Line Pipe is used in systems where the primary requirements include toughness & durability for use in moderately high temperatures.
