difference between equal tee and reducing tee

  • Steel Equal Tees pipe fittings: The three branches of tee have same diameters.
  • Steel Reducing Tees / Reducer tee pipe fittings: The branch diameter is smaller than the main line diameter.
  • Tee reducer is usually described as NPS diameters in 4” x 4” x 3”, 4” is the main line pipe diameter, and 3” is the reducing branch.
  • Reducing tees is used more than equal tee since it has more functions and available for more environments.
  • A straight or equal buttwelding Tees is available for all common diameters.
  • A Reducing Tees not, because many diameters are not produced, or can not be produced.

  • An equal tee-piece is where the pipe intersecting the main header pipe is the same diameter as the header pipe.
  • An unequal tee-piece is where the pipe intersecting the main header pipe is of a smaller diameter than the header pipe
  • Generally the mitre line or the joint line of an equal tee-piece will intersect as far as the centre line of the main header pipe.
  • The mitre line or joint line of an unequal tee-piece will not intersect as far as the centre line of the main header pipe.

Socket Weld Tees

Socket weld tee is a kind of high pressure pipe connection fitting. Like the other fittings, it has a trapezoidal area where the pipe can inserted into the tee branch and weld together.

Threaded Tees

In the manufacturing process, threaded pipe tee has forging and casing process. Forging is formed by heating forging with ingots or round bars, then turning on a lathe to process threads.

To manufactured pipe tee various methods are used, these are the different type of Hot and cold forming process.

  • These methods are
    • Hot forming or Extrusion Method
    • Hydraulic Bulge method – Cold forming
    • UO or Single weld seam Method
    • Monaka or Double weld seam Method

Hydraulic Bulge Method

Hydraulic Bulge method is used to manufacture Tee. Cut piece of Pipe is placed in hydraulic die and liquid is fill inside the pipe, Hydraulic pressure pushes out the branch, in the fixed opening in the die. This method gives the good surface finish. However, higher thickness Tee cannot be manufactured by this method.

Hot Extrusion Method

Tee with large diameters, heavy wall thickness and /or special material with challenging workability that cannot be manufactured using the hydraulic bulge method are manufactured using hot Extrusion Method. In hot Extrusion Method, Normally Bigger diameter pipe is used than the finished product size, the branch outlet is extruded from the pipe with help of extrusion tool. Other dimensions of body and branch can also be adjusted by pressing the die if required.
